Capt. Chris Mowad and his crew fishing onboard the Best Trait out of Orange Beach, Alabama have set a new fishing record for the largest blue marlin ever caught in the Gulf of Mexico when they reeled in a 1,145-pound grander blue marlin.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime catch. The 1,145-pound blue marlin is a pending record for both the largest blue ever caught in the Gulf of Mexico and, by extension, and Alabama state fishing record.

The current Alabama state fishing record for blue marlin is an 851.9-pound fish caught by angler Ginger Ann Myers who was fishing out of Sunset, Alabama on 7/5/20. Earlier this year, a 776.4-pound blue marlin was caught during the Orange Beach Billfish Classic Tournament which set a tournament record. So anglers have known for months there are some BIG FISH around.
