UPDATED: Location changed for Friday ceremony

Due to weather the Veterans Day Program has been moved to First Baptist Church at 256 S Market St in Carthage. Ceremony will start at 11am and will follow with lunch provided by Hospice Plus and Humana.

Veterans Day is Friday, and several groups and organizations are planning events to commemorate the day.

Veterans Day takes place Nov. 11, the anniversary of the ending of World War I, when a 1918 armistice between both the Allies and the Central Powers was signed and war proclaimed at an end on the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.” Congress passed a bill in 1954 changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day to honor those who have served their country.

A Veterans Day program is planned Friday at 11 a.m. at the Panola County Veterans Memorial, 213 N. Shelby St. in Carthage next to the Old Jail. Lunch will be provided by Hospice Plus and Humana.
