STOCKTON – Larry and Joni Ferrari were high school sweethearts at St. Mary’s High, who also played on the Rams’ tennis teams in 1975. You might remember that, at the time, the top-selling song in America was the Captain and Tennille’s Love Will Keep Us Together.
It has kept them together, and so has their lifelong enjoyment of tennis. The Ferraris returned to St. Mary’s on Thursday, and Larry Ferrari, now coach of the rival Lincoln boys’ tennis team, hoped to witness his squad finish a perfect 10-0 season.
They did just that, and Joni was there, arm-in-arm, with the man she met nearly 50 years ago.
Perfection
Lincoln’s 7-2 victory over the Rams (7-3) was the end of the line since COVID-19 erased any kind of a postseason. Both Ferrari and St. Mary’s coach Bob “Chino” Chiene spoke about how last year’s season was cut short just as league action was to begin. This year, there was no preseason, just league matches.
