Fishing tournament connects Soldiers to community | Sports

As the sun was just rising over the rolling terrain around Stillhouse Hollow Lake Saturday morning, around two dozen fishing boats took off from the boat ramp at Dana Peak Park, each carrying two or three fishermen.

Around 50 Soldiers and local fishermen, many of them military veterans or retirees, participated in this year’s Charles B. Allen Memorial Bass Fishing Tournament, hosted by the United States Field Artillery Association’s Red Team Chapter at Fort Hood. The annual event is in its seventh year.

Charles B. Allen served as the battalion commander for the 3rd Battalion, 41st Field Artillery Brigade before he achieved the rank of brigadier general in 1998. While serving as the deputy commanding general of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood, Allen was killed in a helicopter crash during a training accident in September 2004.
