SOUTH HERO, Vt. — Hartford High placed both of its boats in the top 10 out of 30 competitors at Sunday’s VPA Classic high school bass fishing tournament on Lake Champlain.
Each school involved could put up to two boats in the water. The second Hartford boat of Jack Grigsby and Tommy Gross finished eighth overall with 18.26 pounds of fish. Working alone on Hartford’s first boat, Gordie Willey accumulated 14.48 pounds for 10th place, topped by a lunker of 3.60 pounds that was second-heaviest in the largemouth bass division.
Defending state champion White River Valley also had two boats in the competition. WRV’s second boat had the best day, finishing 19th at 9.80 pounds. Quarry Valley — the western district that includes Proctor, Poultney and West Rutland high schools — won the tournament with 23.12 pounds.
