Steven Henson, of Bonne Terre, has become Missouri’s latest state record holder for river carpsucker.
Henson was fishing with his pole and line on the Mississippi River on June 1 when he reeled in the 3-pound, 14-ounce fish, according to a Missouri Department of Conservation news release.
The previous record was a 2-pound, 3-ounce fish caught on the South Grand River in 2008.
The river carpsucker is the most abundant and widely distributed carpsucker in Missouri. This species mainly lives in the Missouri and Mississippi rivers and their major prairie tributaries in northern and western Missouri. The river carpsucker is considered a sport fish, and is rarely taken on hook-and-line.
