SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — An Indiana man stands accused of cheating in a Chicago bass fishing tournament.

According to the Illinois Conservation Police, David Moore, 49, of St. John’s, Indiana, received a tip on May 10th that Moore was hiding fish on a stringer on the Calumet River for the purposes of using them in a tournament the following morning.


Agents set up surveillance at the location and witnessed Moore retrieving four smallmouth bass from the stringer and placing them in his boat.

Moore was registered in the Cal-Sag Bass Anglers tournament, police confirmed.

Police awaited Moore to return to the tournament’s weigh-in location, where the limit was five bass with a minimum length of 12 inches.

Moore returned with 19.5 pounds worth of fish, authorities said

Police said they determined that Moore caught the four smallmouth bass in Lake Michigan near Hammond, Indiana, and brought them into Illinois without a permit.
